I grew up right off the drive (Luray, VA). Beautiful place. I used to work at the Shenandoah National Park headquarters, so I would go all the time with my Park ID, since I didn't have to pay the entrance fee. As others have said, it's tough when the "leaf-peepers" as we called them come to town, the drive can be backed up for miles. But it's a great twisty road with tons of scenic pull-overs and little parking lots for picnics or hikes. Luray has the Caverns and an antique car museum, which is pretty neat (it's part of the caverns complex). Otherwise, there's not much to see. If you're heading to points south, can hit the drive in Front Royal, right off 66, and head south down through North Carolina (where it's called the blue ridge parkway). The views get better the farther south you go. Luray is right at the Thornton Gap entrance to the drive.
