I understand, and from the manufacturer's viewpoint I agree. Average cheaper overall; benefits the average buyer, etc... But I'm not asking for any features that don't already exist, so I don't understand the bit about "more parts to make".
All carmakers do it. I can't buy an Acura RSX-S without leather seats. I can't buy a GTI without some extra luxury stuff. Nobody makes a base version with the performance features. Well, Neon ACR comes to mind... It makes perfect sense to me as an engeneer, but as a car buyer I can't get what I want. So I'll look somewhere else.
The ONLY way we could afford to get a Saab in the first place was because in '89 they were available with cloth seats & hand-crank windows. If it wasn't for that I'd NEVER have known how much I liked them.
I'm not interested in a 9³ Linear, but NOT for the lack of luxo-stuff. For the lack of performance stuff. That's why I'm looking at GTI & WRX. Besides, they have hatches, too.
