However today I read in the May newsstand issue of UK car mag EVO (http://www.evo.co.uk/) that the new Saabaru will instead be marketed as the 9-1. Previous story below from two weeks ago indicated the new car as 9-2. Sadly it appears the 2.5L won't be turbocharged after all.

Saab Confirms Subaru Tie-up
Saab confirmed last month's exclusive evo news story by officially announcing its new Subaru Impreza-based small car.
Badged 9-2, the four-wheel-drive car will be on sale in the US by next spring. It's based on the five-door Impreza hatch and the base model will be powered by a 150bhp 2.5-litre flat-four. The 9-2 Aero will get the Impreza WRX's 221bhp 2-litre turbo unit. The move comes in the wake of heavy losses at Saab and the need to roll out fresh products as quickly as possible. Saab hopes for once to be at the front of a new market trend - identified in the US as the 'premium small car'.
Peter Augustsson, Saab boss, told evo that the design work on the 9-2 was complete and the tooling was underway; the company released the sketches above to whet appetites. 'The 9-2 will get a re-designed front and rear [said to resemble the 9-5 Aero estate], but we will be using the Impreza doors,' he said. The interior is carried over with just colour and trim changes.
Augustsson described Saab and Subaru as 'perfect alliance partners' and hinted the two would work together on future models. European sales are 'possible', he said.
