The "Xenon look" bulbs are usually just ordinary bulbs with a blue coating. They perform worse than ordinary bulbs and should be avoided.
Another trick is to use a small amount of Xenon in otherwise ordinary halogen bulbs - this is just a marketing ploy.
What the bulb makers want you to think is that you're getting xenon arc lighting, which is a completely different thing from the heated filament in a standard bulb.
There are standard halogen bulbs that produce a more intense, less yellow light, and if you stay within the power rating (55W), these can improve your night vision. My own experience with PIAA Platinum Plus bulbs was very positive, until they burned out after six months, making them VERY expensive. I reverted to premium Sylvanias and was happy enough. Now I have a 9-3SS with real xenon arc lighting, and - wow - it really makes a big difference. For the full benefit, you need the whole lighting system designed for arc lighting, a simple retrofit won't do.
