is that particular fuel door is a shining example for me personally regarding GM's views on quality and performance.
I worked at the company that manufactured both versions of the fuel door (early models had remote release, subsequent had manual) Apparently, there were problems with the remote mechanism working properly, so GM decided they'd go with a manual door to avoid scoring low on JD power- they decided they'd like a door like what they had on the Regal- unfortunately, what GM decided was a better design was actually a piece of crap and I was left trying to design a new door based on what was a poor design principal to begin with. No matter what we said, GM insisted that design was what they wanted. Very stressful time, meetings turned into shouting matches, several people were fired and that program was one of my reasons for leaving that company. Rumour was that after I left and the new door (based on the poor design) went into production GM shortly thereafter initiated changes to modify the design to what we'd proposed as a solution from the start- if this is what counts as improvements in quality I'm skeptical at best.
