....to quote the immortal Mr. Krustofsky.
That was just plain frightening. I've always had a soft corner for the 5 series - my folks had a 1988 535is - the last of the shark-nosed Fivers - which was the special occassion/sneak out of the house car of my high school years. While the more recent models homogenized things to some degree, I've always thought of the five as the perfect expression of sedan proportions.
That thing, on the other hand, looked like the fat cousin of the new mid-sized Acura TR or whatever the hell it's called. (shudder)
Normally, I'd withold judgment until seeing the car but two things come to mind:
1) The older ones never looked bad from any angle
2) The new seven (to which this new monster is clearly related) looks good only in very select angles, and then never as a whole car. The rear 3/4 view of the front fender, for example, is breathtaking. The rest of the 3/4 view is nauseating. Like most American cars, the new Bimmers seem to be designed by groups of people who aren't allowed to talk to each other.
3) Everything about this model makes me think of that giant 80's Japanimation robot made of cars and lions - Voltron.
4) I actually really like the 70's minimalist chic of the interior - except for the i drive and accompanying video shroud. Makes me think of NFL instant replay. (Upon further review, the call on the field stands - this car is just butt-ugly).
