How come the latest Accord can run on such low rpm?

My 9000CS, 2.0 LPT, MY95, auto transmission, can do 110km/h (70 mph (imperial)) at 2600 rpm on top gear. I thought the rpm was low enough, testimony of Saab's LPT's "torquey" superiority.
I was therefore surprised when I learned that the latest Honda Accord, with its 5 speed auto transmission, can achieve an even lower rpm of 2300 rpm at similar road speed.
Are VTEC engines that torquey? If not, how could they achieve such low rpm without stalling? That kind of low rpm on the highway will lead to some incredible mpg.
I just wish the 5 speed auto trans on the latest 9-3 and 9-5 will beat the Accord.
