Don't forget that equivalent engines can be geared differently with their transmissions and run similar vehicles at the same vehicle speed but with different engine rpms, for better acceleration or better fuel economy. Revving lower means that the trans must be downshifted to get enough acceleration for the driver, whereas revving higher gets better acceleration response without having to shift gears at the expense of fuel economy, engine noise and wear.
On a side note, if you drive the new Saturn ION sedan with the 5 spd. auto (basically the same 2.2L L850 engine as the L-Series), it runs at about 700 rpm faster than the same engine with the CVT in the quad coupe at 70 mph yet the CVT feels more responsive. I'm a believer in infinite numbers of gear ratios.
