Manual on a hill trick

I never knew of this trick until I read a Porsche BB. If you're on a steep hill in a car with a manual transmission, put the emergency brake on. When it's your turn to go, release the clutch until you feel the car come up against the emergency brake (i.e., the car will go forward slightly), then release the emergency brake and the clutch. There's no going backwards and it's much easier on the clutch. Unfortunately, it doesn't work well for cars without hand-operated emergency brakes, such as my truck (the E brake is foot-operated), but it works well in the Saab.
