I don't agree that this is good for the clutch. Well, it's better than riding the clutch for the whole length of the traffic light, or as you sit at a stop sign.
but, imagine this, you are basically doing a tug-of-war between your ebrake and your clutch....for those few seconds while you are finding the grab-spot of the clutch, you are causing a lot of wear.
Ok, do it once, then you should know where your grab point is....but how tough is this, really? even on the steepest hill, it's a matter of moving your left foot from the floor to that magic point, and in the meantime move your right foot from the brake to the gas....
maybe I just have an easy time with this, but so does my wife, and my dad...mom slips more than she should, but she's never needed a clutch replacement in any of the cars...and for that matter, none of us have worn a disc too thin...
and, even in the 2 stroke sonett, I can handle the worst of hills without smoking the clutch, or rolling much...and I never reach for the handbrake.
I taught myself just how easy the cars will start from a stop (on flat land) without even touching the gas....so, on a hill, you only need a little throttle...
it's all practice.
