I totally agree with this idea of "perceived quality." I think it's why Lexus and other luxury brands did well. People who buy Lexus, Infiniti, and yes even Buick are generally looking for this kind of luxury feel, and I think if they get it from their purchase, then they are happy. Also, the people who I know who drive these cars rarely push them to their limits. So their longer term quality SHOULD be good --- they are, for most (please forgive the expression), old fart cars. They are driven gently.

That's why I think it was impressive that Porsche did so well, long term. People buy those things to drive really fast. I think Porsche has been helped by the Boxster, which seems to be a pretty good car.

I think MB has sold a lot of C class vehicles that clearly are not quality cars, and that has hurt them.

I would also like to see differently weighted complaints. Wind noise is not the same as a car that won't start. The radio not sounding as good as you want it to sound is different from your windshield wiper not working.

I think Saab should be proud. Their reliability seems to be improving all the time.
