The dealers are VERY impressed that SAAB is doing not only a SUV, but the 9-2 as well. Why? Because it brings more people into their showrooms.
Not only that, but they're losing TONS of sales to other makes because they don't have a SUV to offer. You might not like a SUV - I'm not a huge fan either - but many, many people do and that fact is further proven by that particular market segment's continued growth. The bottom line is that they have more room and capabilities than a wagon and don't have the stigma attached to wagon - my wife continually tells me that if/when we have kids and need more room, she won't be caught dead in a wagon or mini-van. What does that leave us? A SUV and most likely a 9-7 since we're SAAB loyalists.
The comment about wishing for $4/gallon gas prices so SUVs will go away is one of the silliest things I've ever heard. This is a free market based capitalist society in case you've not noticed. It's about giving the people what they want. They want SUVs. You don't have to buy one.
