2000 Specialized Aluminum M4 frame S-Works Road bike - full dura-ace components, mavic wheelset, Time carbon fork, 3T Stem, Cateye -- weighs in at ~19 lbs or less. Picture below. I keep it in pristine running order.
I bought it from an avid Mountain biker that thought he would try road biking, but after 100 miles found it boring. He was used to buying expensive bikes so at $3800 this was an easy purchase - he dumped it for $1200 on ebay - not too many following the Specialized road bikes on Ebay. When I got the bike it was as good as new - had it checked out and my service guy asked if it had ever been riden. It was so nice to part with my old Raliegh Technium I had riden and raced for 16 years (Still hangs in the garage).
Every Saturday morning I ride 40-50 miles. If I have a day off I might do that longer ride as well. I ride about 3-4 nights per week for at least 20 miles. I use a Cyclops trainer for indoor riding.
Like you I am conservative averaging 19-20 Mph. Here in Texas we don't have much in the way of hills, mostly small inclines. The heat can be brutal and the wind is a major factor everytime I ride.
Its been a 5 month break for me. We had kiddo #2 in January so I am just now getting back up to my routine. My friend that I ride with on the 40 mile stretch kicked my a$$ last weekend - I could only average about 17 mph and my butt hurt! Also it was 98 degrees...We were getting ready for a 50 mile race the following weekend, but I bailed as I did not want to be embarrased. Maybe in 2 weeks I will be back up to form...we'll see...
I grew up in Connecticut and began riding when I was a kid since my Dad loved road biking. Its stuck with me to this date and is my favorite form of excercise. Golfing is my favorite casual sport and I am still an avid downhill skier when I can get to Colorado. Just some simple pleasures...
