There's been some publicity on a device called a "skimmer" which is installed in a cash machine which really gives cash (convenience store, etc.) Installed by the machine owner (who leases it to the store) or surreptitiously by someone else. Each time a card goes in, it dispenses cash, but the device records all of the card's data, and when the data is downloaded by the scammer, the scammer manufactures new cards. The cards need not look right, as they are then used just in machines.
I log on to my credit card web sites pretty frequently to look at what is there. Everything goes on line in a day or so, and you get a heads up if something starts to happen.I have a 19 year old daughter who has a card, and I especially watch her card, because she hasn't learned caution (thinks I am ridiculous for urging her to use a firewall)
