Buying car speakers from UN-authorized dealers?

Has anyone ever purchased audio equipment from unauthorized dealers? I'm wondering if this is a safe thing to do from the consumer viewpoint, and if the product was the same as you would get from a more expensive and authorized dealer?
Specifically, I'm looking to replace the speakers in my 1996 900SET. I'm considering any of the high-end speaker manufacturers including Infinity, Boston Acoustics, and MB Quart. These are pricey speakers at my local audio store, but you can get them CHEAP from a variety of places that advertise in the back of car magazines or on Ebay. Big discounts are common. These places claim that they sell new and not remanufactured products that do not include the manufacturer warranty, but instead come with a warranty from the store selling them. I've never had to return an item like this for a warranty claim so I'm not too worried about that, but what I am worried about is getting a product that is the same as I would if I bought it from an authorized dealer. I mean that if I buy a pair of Infinity 3.5 inch speakers from the fancy dealer down the street, is it the same exact speaker that I can buy from Elmer's Electronics Emporium through Ebay? Does anyone have any experience doing this? Tips, recommendations, warnings...?
Thanks,
David
