Don't skimp on a comfortable mattress or bed. I presume you have a very limited budget and limited space.
I implore you not to buy a futon--unless the overall comfort and design has changed since the early 90s (I owned one during my sophomore year in college and threw it out after one semester). Because it was a bit of a pain in the ass to unfold and fold the darn thing, I usually left it unfolded. When I did fold it into a sofa, the matress did not keep its form for very long when guests used it. The matress would slide around.
Instead, I suggest you buy a good matress and design an area that serves as a bedroom and lounge area. The only other components you'll need are a sheet of plywood and some paint. The plywood will serve as a platform/frame. This is much easier than it sounds.
First, figure out what size matress you want to get. Then, go to Home Depot or any lumber yard/hardware store and purchase a sheet of plywood. The plywood could be the same size as the matress or a bit bigger so that you have a border of 6" to 12" around the bed. Next, paint or stain the plywood to your desired color. NOw put the matress over the plywood (after it dries, of course). Voila! You have a stylish minimalist sleeping area. If you want to raise the platform ab it, place bricks under the plywood. This would give the appearance that the bed is "floating".
To make the space serve double duty, get some good sheets (ikea or target has some nice colors and patterns these days), and a few decorative pillows (12", 18", even 24" squares). Your bed can now be used as a seating/lounge area and easily cleared for sleeping.
If you feel adventurous, paint a portion above the bed so that it looks like you have a headboard (use the same color of paint as the platform). I suggest no more than three feet high and the width of the platform. To be even fancier, hang a sheet of thin fabric behind the head of the bed. This anchors the space and gives an interesting visual.
All of this can be done rather cheaply. I had a 450sf apartment in NYC and did the same thing.
