I just started grad school and have been looking for cheap multi-function furniture a lot lately, too. I assume your dorm room comes with a regular bed and the sofabed would be for sitting and to provide you with some guest accomidations. I refuse to buy a futon because it is not my style, but the one big advantage of a futon is that they're easy to move since they have two components, which both fold. You can get one into a minivan or a maybe big station wagon. And if I were going to stay overnight at someone's house I'd choose a futon over a sofabed any day, but I guess that is a matter of preference.
I've also found eBay to be generally worthless in this department, although I guess it depends on where you live. My city has a store that sells all the stuff that comes from hotels when they are liquidated, maybe yours does, too? You can buy used sofabeds galore, and really cheesy coffee tables, dressers, and even art! Also, you might have done this already but your local newspaper probably has classified listings for people trying to get rid of stuff like what you're looking for.
Where do you live?
Good luck
Annie
