Unfortunately I don’t have much else to say that has not been said already. I was in Beijing and Xi’an earlier this year (just before the news of SARS hit the US). Culturally it was quite different, but it seem that the people knew that I would not understand their customs. Overall it was a great experience. Most of the business was conducted at or around lunch. I always waited until they told me where to sit. The seat opposite the door is reserved for the most honored guest (and the person paying for the meal). Most times I received that seat since I was a foreigner. They would not let me pay for meals. I would avoid chicken dishes; sometimes it can be a little pink. Don’t be surprised if they ask you how much you make or what kind of car you drive.

Anytime you visit one of the tourist areas people trying to sell you books, maps, trinkets and taxi service will pester you. In my 10 days there I was only able to visit Tiannamen Square/Forbidden Palace in Beijing and the Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an. The Forbidden Palace was very impressive. Both Beijing and Xi’an were overcast every day. The haze was described as sand blowing from the Gobi desert, but I suspect it was pollution (you will see).

It is common for the Chinese to work on Saturdays and Sundays so I hope you get the time to sight see.
