Beijing: Much more to do than Shanghai, worth the trip, but depends on your preference. I went to both Shanghai and Beijing for two weeks.
Beijing is more culturally oriented (Forbidden City, Summer Temple, Opera house, etc), and while there are many touristy things to do, it beats the cosmopolitan shanghai (a miniature NYC, besides the Bund and the temple there is no great spot to go). While in Beijing visit the Great Wall, an hours drive.

Shanghai:
The Bund (walkway along the river)
Nanjin Lu (Shopping street, ie 5th Ave)
Yuyaun Gardens (old houses before europeans exploration)
River Cruise (if you like architecture, modern)
When I went they still hadn't started construction on the Tower!!
Good clubs at night.

Beijing:
Forbidden City (a must see)
Summer Palaca (another must see)
Beijing Opera (I would recommend, very inexpensive, different)
Silk Alley (knockoff at cheap prices, must go)
Great places to go at night in Embassy area.

Hotels:
Beijing Hotel - next to Tiannamen Square, elegant, and well worth it.
Peace Hotel - Shanghai, next to the Bund, on Nanjin Lu.

-As mentioned earlier, hand cards and accept business cards with two hands.
-Don't be too aggressive, sign of disrepect if you speak loudly.
-Many Pekinese do not speak English.

I can't come up with anything else now (wow, can't believe its been over a year that I went there), but e-mail me if you need anything else.
