While I was in school in NC, we were hit by the three storms listed above. Fran was the worst, damage-wise, but the flooding from the other two was no cake walk, either. Bottom line is that you can't really be ready for a storm like this. The power they possess is beyond comprehension. I watched a tree, 5 ft in diameter, get knocked to the ground like it was a sappling during Fran. For a week after Fran, our toilets would not flush, we had no running water, and the entire town was basically shut down. The best thing to come out of the storm(s) was seeing everyone come together to help out with clean up.
Batteries, a gas grill of some kind, flashlights, and waterproof work boots are necessities for hurricanes. Plus be ready to volunteer if you make it out ok! As far as the cars... they will have to ride it out. That's what insurance is for.

PS: The current storm track has Isabel rolling right over my house! Silver Spring, MD (just outside of DC).
