If he's going to drive the car every day, I'd recommend a '95 M3... only 3.0 liters, but OBD1, much easier to tune, the '95 MY production run of M3s was very long, so there are plenty of cars about, and probably better value than the '96-'99 cars. There is no end of BMW boards... pelican parts has a good BMW section, http://www.bimmerworld.com has good info, http://www.bimmerforums.com is similar to saabnet... The E30 cars are more fun, but have a true M-engine and hence more maintenance. Also, they're all about 15 years old, and many have been abused by now... and if he's thinking of spending $35k, he probably wants something newer. If he want's a SAAB, he could bu a Viggen for $20k, spend $5k on tuning, and have a car that will outrun most M3's on the road, and he won't see three more identical to his at every stoplight... Similar with a 9000 or 9-5 Aero, though not as rare as the Viggen, and 9000s are getting older...
