Hi Adrian,
No need to apologize for attraction to such a potent and competent car - I loved my BMW. The early 4-cylinder E-30 M3's are so purely enjoyable, that one is tempted to suggest such a beast - but they are over a decade old at this point. They are cheap - but that is no favor if they are breaking and you are not a DYI kind of guy. The late model E36 variant, say 1998 had all of the bugs worked out - produced a safe and dependable 240hp - and are solid as a rock. The MCoupe hard top was an under-appreciated beast and is available at great prices. The E46 models are just too damn expensive (which why I abandoned BMW) - even used.
I must say, the neatest thing about Bimmer's is the burgeoning aftermarket industry and club support. I still belong to BMWCCA and go to the BMW speed shops (Bavarian Autosport is awesome) for gear and advice. I have an '03 Aero for my family - but I am watching for an E36 M3 or an MCoupe (hard top) that I can afford... I just love the cars to death.
Best,
eric
