Does it suddenly lock up with no warning, and leave your screen looking perfectly normal except that the mouse pointer won't move, the computer doesn't respond to any input, and nothing else moves or changes either? What about if you press numlock/capslock...do the lights change on the keyboard? When you move the mouse, does the laser get bright for a little while, and then go back to dim, or is it frozen dim or frozen bright?

If everything is frozen hard (monitor, keyboard lights, mouse laser), then it's most likely a hardware problem, and not a software problem. A common cause is overheating, either of the CPU or of the video card. Check that your fans are running, and that there is good airflow around the computer. Check that the vents on the computer aren't clogged by dustballs, etc. How warm is the room where you have your computer?
