OT Anyone having trouble with an optical mouse?

Our home computer has been crashing (freezing) repeatedly recently. Took it in to the local computer shop. They updated WindowsXP for me (I was two weeks behind), did a virus check, loaded an anti-spyware program, tested the machine for 18 hours with some full cycling test program.
End result was nothing found other than 30 spyware programs, blamed all my troubles on that.
Brought the machine home and it continues to freeze. Until this morning all happened with some spyware detected. After the latest crash I ran both McAfee for virus detection and Ad-Aware for spyware detection. Both scored a zero!
The only other common denominator seems to be that each freeze involves movement/clicking of our Microsoft optical mouse. I pulled that now and have installed a generic ball mouse as a test to see if freezing continues.
Anyone else ever have a problem with an optical mouse?
By the way. My machine is connected through a Link-Sys router acting as a hardware firewall, McAfee's software firewall running, all internet connection settings set to maximum security.
Thanks.
