there are lots of kids there, but also some folks who are genuinely in-the-know.
Now, regarding oil usage on a 2.slow :) VW:
Yes, some engine of this type simply use oil. Some of them excessive amounts. I am aware of at least 6 2.0's that were replaced by VW for excessive comsumption. VW states that 1 qt etween changes is not excessive. That breaks down to about 1/2 qt every 3K miles, since a 2.0 change interval is 7500 miles. Not terrible, not good either.
Some, though, use tons of it. What your g'f needs to do is have the dealer establish a record of the oil level. Every week, even more oftenif she can, she needs to get to the same dealer and have them check the oil, and maintain this log for a few weeks. this is generally enough info to file a claim for VW to change the engine. One of the four 2.0's across the street had this extreme consumption problem. Nearly a qt/week is not acceptable, yet her mother's 2.0 doesn't use a drop-ever. This is an inconvenient solution, but constantly topping the oil up and telling the dealer later does not give them proof in black and white. In fact, the girl across the street was told not to top it up - to bring it to the dealer and have them do it.
