the vw vortex site is pretty lame. The site is laid out terribly and you have to login to do anything. Havn't got much technical information out of the site either.
My wife's '99 Mk4 golf buns about 1 qt of oil per 1000-1500 miles. The car has 60k miles on it and I've been running Mobile 1 - I bought it used. I've heard (don't remember where) that excessive oil consumption is common in the 8v 2.0 engine, but I'm not sure if its a design flaw or user error. I make a habit of checking the oil at every fill - I guess its a good habit anyway. In retrospect (from 40->60k, the last year, problems with windshield wiper pivot, cat convertor, window regulators, check engine light, funny automatic shifting points, and present power steering moan) I really wish we would have either (a) waited for a TDI Golf or Jetta or (b, preferably) waited for a really good late 90's 9000CSE.
Then again its a cinch to park and I like the shape and the hatch. I also think that around the city the 2.0 8v motor isn't really the dog I initially thought it might be. That said the TDI engine is the way to go! The 2.0 buzzes a little too high on the freeway for my ear.
The Bentley manual for the Mk4 golf/jetta isn't too bad. It was a great help when I was replacing the windshield wipers and diagnosing the check engine light.
