the doughnuts which he might be thinking of. These were clamshells of pressed metal, held together with bolts, with pieces of solid rubber inside which separated and cushioned the metal paddles at the ends of the drive shafts connecting the wheels to the transaxel. In effect they were a very simple U-joint which one could work on with a set of common wrenches. No booties or spindle bearings to worry about.
