Hi folks -- your advice will be greatly appreciated. My friend's 97 900s (automatic) is acting up. She drove it about 30 miles in
two 15-mile trips yesterday, then drove to the local drugstore and had the car stop altogether as she rolled into a parking spot.
I drove up to check the car out, by which time it started fine. We drove the car all day to run errands and try to reproduce the
problem, which it finally did in the evening. It died while cruising along at about 35mph. I checked all the fuses and re-seated all
the relays I could find (no manual with the car) to no avail. After it sat for a couple hours, it did restart, but died again on the
way home (after about 5 miles driving). It sat through the Cubs game last night, and restarted and ran long enough to get home.
Does this model have a fuel pump that should prime for a few seconds when the key is turned to "ACC?" I never heard the
pump run when trying to restart the car hot, and foolishly never listened before successfully starting it. Does a dying pump even
make sense? The car dies abruptly whether it's cruising or at idle; no missing or sputtering at all. Just... nothing. Same with
restart attenpts; no stumbling or anything at all 'til the car has cooled a bit.
I am guessing ignition or fuel pump. Any advice?
Many thanks folks; my friend hopes to have an idea of what the problem might be before trying to find a shop to check the car
out. If anyone knows of a decent shop in the Champaign/Urbana IL area, that would be of great help too! Please feel free to
email directly with any clues.
