New 1.8i engine for Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan range
The appeal of the Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan range is now broadened further by the addition of a naturally-aspirated 1.8-liter engine in all model specifications, except Aero. It complements the current line-up of 150, 175 and 210 bhp 2.0-liter turbo and 125 bhp 2.2 TiD engines.
The 122 bhp/90 kW, 16-valve,1.8i engine, incorporating direct ignition and an integrated exhaust catalyst, delivers excellent fuel economy, with low emissions and running costs, as well as lively performance.
The use of an electronic throttle and a variable length intake manifold has allowed engineers to retain a key Saab driving characteristic: strong low and mid-range pulling power. At least 90 per cent of maximum torque (167 Nm) is generated between 2,400 and 5,700 rpm.
With adaptive service intervals as long as two years/30,000 km and the prospect of lower insurance groupings, scheduled running costs for Saab 9-3 1.8i variants will be competitively low. An electro-hydraulic power steering system is also fitted as standard with this engine, further contributing to improved fuel economy.
Combined cycle fuel consumption of 7.9 liters/100 km shows an improvement against the 150 bhp turbo engine, while zero to 100 kph acceleration in 11.5 secs, with an excellent throttle response, still feels sporty.
The new engine option is offered in manual transmission only. It is expected to lower the entry price point for Linear, Arc and Vector variants by about five per cent, bringing the 9-3 range within the budgets of more cost-conscious owners who still seek a premium-class driving experience
