In Europe cars are frequently taxed based on engine size (and now on CO2 emissions in the UK), so carmakers will offer a whole range of engine sizes in the same body style. I'll never forget seeing a 1.8 badged Audi A6 in Paris - considering how slowly my 2.8 accelerated, I couldn't even imagine trying to drive a car like that. But it's all about the benjamins, including MPG issues.
Even Jag has to offer a puny frontwheeldrive 2.0 version of the X Type in the UK to increase sales volume.
