What's a city tax? $50 for license and registration would still make the motor vehicle department a profit. It's that way in many states. Other states like California have a form of personal property tax on automobiles calculated as a percentage of the value. In California that went from approximate 8/10ths of a percent, up to almost 2.0%. Not quite the triple foes claim, but still very substantial. The license fee I just quoted for a $30,595 Saab in San Diego was $571. Now Saab is giving a $500 rebate towards that.
