You haven't seen Indiana; I paid $500+ when I first registered my '95 900S. But a little background should help.
Indiana has always had a tax that is proportional to the car, and even after the car turns into a junker, it's still high. My '95 Prizm pays $60/yr, the 95 Saab about $80. A new Linear Wagon (03) paid $360. These numbers are after the auto excise tax cut that happened after the Lottery was established. The Lottery cut the plate fees in half. It was passed in '88 to take effect in '89 or so, then after a couple years they rescinded it, and finally we got the tax break back. It has yet to be made permanent, tho.
I remember waiting in the Bureau of Motor Vehicles in the early 90's (always fun to wait by the cashier and read the chi-ching) and it was not unusual to see someone pay $1000/year for plates. Our gas taxes and overall taxes are decent, tho.
