Hi NT,
A simple waxing question on this board is like a simple oil question - it tends to open a floodgate of opinions. I am a tad loony about my cars and winter prep - so I won't bother with that level of absurdity (wheels off waxing, under hood, seems, etc.) - best to save that story for my therapist - problem with that is he's a car nut too...
Anyway, let's use my SUV as the target vehicle. I live in the Boston Metro area that has, among other notable characteristics, the largest open-air raod salt pile North America (Chelsea/East Boston) - so I have much the same problem. Layering wax, in my opinion, is not terribly helpful - perhaps on teh nose of teh car - wait until the water no longer beads up. However, I would suggest that you boot the Ivory soap. Any dish soap or detergent is formulated to REMOVE wax (or oil). You want to use the weakest, mildest stuff available - especially in the winter when you cannot rewax. I use a carwash that has a wax adative, such as Eagle One or a mixture of Griot's with a bit of their Speed Shine.... In a pinch I have used hair shampoo with conditioner at a friends house when no "car" products were available
Good luck
eric
