1st Bangle rear end that works, but still...... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Sat, 1 Nov 2003 17:29:43 In Reply to: The new 5 series..., bRAD, Sat, 1 Nov 2003 04:45:45 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Unlike the 7 and the new 6 whose trunk lids look like an afterthought, the new 5 trunk and cut lines seems to work. I wonder if the revised 7 will have a rear end similar to the new 5?
It's the sides of the new 5 that bother me. The 7, the new 6 and all other BMW's have nicely curved sides. The sides of the new 5 are flat producing an extra character line away from the lower edge of the windows. This visually shrinks the greenhouse like a mid 60's Lincoln. The flat sides also produce some awkward areas at the base and corners of the windshield and the whole side treatment reminds we of a Hyundai, the Elantra I think. Also the wheel well shapes are chunky. And the rear end, although it works better than the 7 and the 6, is still not elegant.
European designs used to have well defined radius', that is the lines didn't suggest anything off the form. Japanese designs were all about pointing off the car. Old BMW kidney grills were oval or trapezoid with nicely rounded corners. Now the kidney has a definite point at it's upper outside corner. Same with "flame surfacing" of the Z4, none of the lines or shapes finish on the form but instead suggest somewhere else. Am I making any sense?
