Suprisingly on-par with what I glean from car owners I know, magazine reviews, internet forums.

If anything perhaps it shows that popularity has *nothing* to do with reliability. VW/Audi/Merc/Volvo sell many, many times the cars that SAAB does, in the same class/price range. According to the survey they are far less reliable.

Strong marketing & branding pushes a product up past the "is it reliable?" pack. No one even offers the question with a new Merc/Audi - it's tantamount to sacrilege.

I can count on my fingers and toes the number of recalls 2 co-workers have been subjected to for their '01//02 VW Golfs, from engine coilpack failure to a dead transmission <30,000 miles. But it's still one of VW's most popular cars. Maybe reliability is overrated. ;-)

Clapping hands should be directed towards Audi (overcame the transmission fiasco of the 80s) and VW (whose boss Ferdinand Pietch turned the company around in the early 90s before it nearly went the way of Peugot in the US). Their cars have been marketed brilliantly.

When someone figures out just how the hell to market SAAB stateside, it'll fare much better as well. Their product is already excellent.
