This brings the very important question... What do you do with an expensive, older car that has higher mileage? Imagine, say, an entry level luxury car ($30-35k) in a few years with 150-175k miles. It'll be at the point where serious service may be needed on a regular basis (auto trans rebuild, AC, a head gasket, turbo), and even regular wear items are $500's (water pump, alternator, starter, etc). Meanwhile the car's complex enough that not very many independents are qualified to work on it(and those that are charge serious $). Add to that the limited parts availability (low production numbers, not Toyota-fits-Lexus deal) and you got a recipe for serious economic doom there. Especially if you just traded an econo midsize (Accord, Camry) from the mid 90's that could do 150-200k miles with minimal trouble...
Something tells me to name the above 'reverse Anna-Nicole Smith' symptom :-). Any thoughts? What do you do with a 10 year old, 200k mile Lexus LS400? Infiniti Q45? 9-5?
