Subarus are very popular in New England, and when I lived in Maine I knew a few people with them. I think they really do think the car itself will protect them. One person had a particular Subaru that channels power to the wheel that is not slipping, and she was sure this kept her safe. We talked about her cornering technique, and she said she always took her foot off the gas on a curve, and she figured this technological marvel kept those tires stuck firmly to the ice.
I learned to avoid getting too close to Subarus in Maine and continue that practice in the Midwest. That and Tauruses.
