The trooper obviously liked you and his advice is correct. Show up on the court date...do call and find out when, what, etc. I would not try to weasel out on some procedural nonsense. These NYS traffic courts are not always a traditional courtroom set up. You should talk to the trooper or the prosecutor about pleading guilty to a reduced charge. He'll go back to the "judge" and with any luck, come back and offer you a zero or two point violation with a fine and court fee. They want the revenue and if you're not a jerk will give you a break.
I think it's always worth doing this, because even with a clean record, insurance companies usually only give you one or two tickets before you start getting whacked. Given Murphy's Law, routine tickets come in bunches.
