An MSF course should be the first stop for anyone getting into or returning to motorcycling. They are well worth the time and money.

You might reconsider purchasing the Monster as your *first* bike. One certainty in motorcycling is that you will drop this bike. Whether it is riding slowly through a parking lot, pushing it into the garage or not noticing the spot of oil you just stopped your front tire in, it'll happen.

Why not check out the classified and pick up an old 1970's Honda 500 or the like for less than $1000? Just about any bike can sustain 70mph, the Monster will probably do that in 3rd gear. Spend some extra money on a nice helmet, armored jacket/pants/gloves and riding boots (MSF course too) and give it a go. If you love riding in a year, sell the bike for what you bought it for and get whatever bike you want. It probably won't be the Monster at that point.
