I'll give you 10-1 odds that you will drop it in the first year.
Hopefully just a driveway tipover.
A standard/naked bike like the Monster is a good choice, as is something 600+/- cc's and less. There aren't too many choices, as every kid with more balls than brains want's a new liter sportbike (or the new 600's, almost as fast), and every 40-year old with money and a mid-life crisis wants a Harley or some 750-lb Harley clone.
Someone mentioned a Suzuki SV-650. I'd be more partial to a Honda Hawk (gotta love those single-side-swingarm Honda's), but the SV would be an excellent first bike. Honda Nighthawks (750 and older 650's) should be cheap and available. Pretty old technology for the new 750's, and kinda heavy, but would be adequate beginner bike.
If you want something sportier-looking, the Kawasaki EX500 is suppose to be an excellent beginner bike.
Definitely get MSF training, do some additional reading (Keith Code, the Proficient Motorcyclist). Don't scrimp on riding gear. My hide is worth the $1350 or so that I put on every time I get on my bike.

What's the valve-adjustment schedule and shop charges for a Monster 620?
