From someone who buys too many cars... Posted by MisplacedYankee [Email] (#1756) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MisplacedYankee) on Sat, 13 Dec 2003 20:29:21 In Reply to: Soda - Cars - Cereal - etc... I must have ADD for cars since I get bored so quickly...funny thing is that I often reconsider (and have) buying cars I have already owned and miss -- example: 2000 Viggen Coupe and after a car inbetween bought a 1999 Viggen Coupe (same color and everything). I could have saved myself a few bucks if I wasn't nuts.
At any rate -- I think people are very loyal to makes of cars -- especially once someone has had a good experience with a vehicle. I know many people that are Toyota, Honda, or Nissan loyalist and understandably so given the quality of these cars.
My parents haven't bought American since I convinced my Dad to buy a 1985 VW Quantum. 18 years later he drives a 2000 Passat. If its not a VW its a Volvo. I am inches away from him replacing the Passat with a 2003/2004 9-5 aero...Once again though his decision would be based on my good experience with 3 Saabs.
Today I am the same way. The only American car I would buy would be GM. Thats the only American brand I have owned. I also would buy a VW in a heartbeat as well as an Audi (although my last Audi - the allroad - has made me concerned). I have owned 2 flawless BMWs and now 3 flawless Saabs. I won't be venturing from this list.
Another thought: like the taste of diet coke vs diet pepsi I believe people get used to interiors etc. I think car manufacturers know it. I can't even stand to be in a Ford or Chrysler, but yet I like the interior of our Chevy Suburban even though it is probably just as crappy. My first car was a Buick and and I also owned an 88 Chevy Berretta. Growing up all we owned were GMs -- so did I perhaps develop a taste for how they design their interiors? Just seems odd and I am a fairly free thinker open to anything.
I don't know what it is about loyalty, but I do go to bed at night feeling comfortable that every auto manufacturer has probably spent 100's of millions trying to figure it out.
