Good snow tires are the way to go. I threw my chains in the trash 15 years ago and have never regreted it. If you ever hit dry pavement with the chains on you will have an interesting experience!
I guess chains made some sense in the old days of rear-wheel drive and bias-ply tires, and if you lived in an area where the roads were solid with snow.
Some people keep a set in the trunk for emergencies, but trying to put these things on by the side on the road in bad condidtions is a) very difficult, and b) very dangerous.
