I currently run 185/65/15 Artic Alpins on my SPG, never had any issues in snow. However, on christmas day, we went skiing up in the mountains (Alta, UT), and we HAD to have chains on to be allowed up the canyon road.
I bought a set from JC whitney, sure grip Z cables. They were sitting in the truck past 2 years with no use. They did work nice, and took about 20min to put on. Probably take 10 the next time around.
The cable style left plenty of room between the tires and the fenders.
Unless you are required in some areas to have chains, you can usually do without them with good snow tires.
