If the driving experience is as differentiated as the styling, this will be a terrific car! Subaru did half of Michael Mauer's work in '03 when they restyled the "D" pillar to match the 9-5 Wagon. There is no mistaking where this car came from, but also no mistaking that it is a Saab and not a Subaru. New front sheet metal about do a "frog into a prince" transformation (and the '03 restyle was a huge improvement!). Inside is much more stylish, with a 9-5-like single sweep of the center console (On display was the Aero with its brushed aluminum trim. No mention of the standard trim). Saab claims the seats are all unique from the frames up - better shape, better foam, better covers, and of course SAHR. Also unique springs, shocks, sway bars, steering feel, and some unique suspension arms. We'll see about that. Also seat haaters and headlight washers - Also take note, 99 inch wheelbase, 175 inch overall length ... which Sixten Sason designed Saab had those dimensions!

Like the story said, this is no more a Subaru than an Acura is a Honda, or an Audi is a VW. There's plenty of room in the market place for both. I spoke with Kyoji Takenaka, President and CEO of Fuji Heavy Industries about the project, and Fuji is very happy to have the extra volume. They are also happy that Saab's requirements fit well with what they could do with the product. As for how Saab loyalists view the car, remember that there are some who still haven't forgiven the switch to 4-stroke engines...
