Had an interesting chat with my indy the other day.
He was talking about the quality of mechanics and the work they do, especially Saab dealer techs, and over time has come to the conclusion that a lot of Saab dealer technicians are real hammer mechanics (never force anything, get a bigger hammer). He's learned this by having hired some of these guys--often at a premium--and has almost always been unhappy with the way they work. And some of them, he said, really don't know all that much about Saabs. He says they do things the hard way, break a lot of stuff they don't need to, and figure the customer will never know.
As a result, some of his techs had just basic mechanical training when they started but he and his senior tech have trained them in their "own" procedures which he believes are a lot better than many "factory" methods. From the examples he gave they do seem faster and easier.
I've been going to this place for almost 9 years. The present owner took over the shop from the guys who started it. They had 20 yrs in Saab dealers and were sick of the way dealers treated customers and the way other techs worked. They trained the present owner and he is carrying on the tradition. They don't work on anything but Saabs and are always booked up a couple weeks out. People come from miles away to go to this hole in the wall shop.
I avoid dealers at all costs. When you come right down to it, other than for warranty work, there aren't many reasons to use a dealer. DIY and a good indy will get you thru anything. So buy your indy a case of beer from time to time, to let him know you appreciate him.
Cheers,
Noel
