I rate for the local Chicago Reader: 'Go Neighborhood'

Nearly all of the recs have been for downtown... Generally overpriced, and food prep quality seems to fluctuate too much within the same downtown restaurant. 'Go neighborhood' and generally get a better deal, and dine with people who live and eat in the heart of Chicago as opposed to the downtown expense account jokers or the zombie-like tourists asking for "pizza... pizza... pizza..."
Other ideas than those give so far, equally gourmet, at more reasonable prices which would include 1 glass of wine, entree, and dessert or appetizer:
Lakeview:
YOUSHI'S CAFE: California/French/Japanese fusion. When Paris reared chef Yoshi he did his former upscale Chicago restuarant he was consistently in the top 10 throughout the 80s and early 90s. This is the best bargain in the city for the quality. $50 per person.
Wicker Park/Bucktown:
MOD: For sheer spunky enthusiasm this is a great place. Heartier and tastier versions of cooler than thou NY fare. Atmosphere is second only to some often very well prepared food. Dessert chef is nationally famous.
$50 per person
Lincoln Park:
NORTH POND CAFE: Want to eat in a turn of the century authentic Prarie-style building with an elegant interior not just in the Lincoln Park neighborhood but actually in the Park itself? This place is touch snooty, but the classic MidWestern versions of generally continental food, not to mention the truly incredible organic ingredients, make it worth putting up with the local BMW crowd.
yours,
Jon
