I let my car idle for as long as it takes. It could be 1-2 minutes or 15+ minutes.
In my opinion idling cannot do any damage to your engine. As long as the cooling system is keeping things at temp, and the engine oil level is good, I don't see why it can't idle all day long. I believe in most cases, an idling car in HOT weather is more dangerous as this causes old coolant hoses to rupture and then your engine overheats.
Just think of all those people in California that sit in traffic jams for hours at a time. I always laugh when people say to not let the car idle for more than 15 minutes when we are stuck in very slow moving traffic jams.
Plus, if it were really that bad, I would think car manufacturers would either void the warranty if you idle your car over a specific amount of time, or charge an "extended idling" warranty.
That's my opinion on the matter.
