Had a '78 99GL, and it was amazing in snow.
I recall driving west from Boston in a true blizzard along the Mass Pike. The car was motoring along, humming happily at 65MPH in 8 inch deep packed snow (no snowplows had ventured forth yet) and I was passing cars for 40 miles or so, just cruising in the left lane, until I noticed flashing headlights behind me.
It was an '81 900 Wagonback with a ski rack on top. The driver gave me a big grin and thumbs up as he passed me, and we traveled clear to the Berkshires together, never being passed.
As you say... oh to be young in the winter with a 99 again...
