9K auto trannys are usually pretty strong, but do you really want to play the percentages with an older car? I've owned a 89 9K with AT and a 91 manual and they're both a blast to drive. I got rid of the AT just as it stopped shifting into second unless I nudged the shifter myself. I'm sure that I was looking down the barrel of a $1,200 rebuild.
If you're absolutely sure the AT you're getting is bulletproof (and can you really, without knowing when or if it was last serviced, and the driving style of the previous owner?) then go for it...
There's really no difference in winter driving performance between an AT and a manual because you're going to drive them the same way in wintry conditions: start in 2nd gear on slippery roads, ease off the gas in corners...
good luck!
