Follow Mike Lynch's advice about the certified pre-owned cars. You'll definitely have more peace of mind, and it's up to you whether that offsets the higher price you'll pay through the CPO program. If you're unfamilar with Saabs, and don't anticipate doing much light wrenching yourself, that's probably the way to go. Check out edmunds.com for the article on CPO cars. The "peace of mind" issue is a major consideration.
I've steered a couple of folks at work in that direction, while others have been content to have a competent Saab-certified mechanic check out their prospective purchase. (Depending on the car, and the situation, you can save yourself thousands.)
Also: make a habit of checking Ebay frequently to get a feel for the range of prices. If you see something on the lot that catches your eye, you should be able to get a sense (a ballpark sense at the very least) of how off the price is, and how much your should actually consider paying.
Last, but certainly not least, search the Edmunds site for the in-depth article "Confessions of a Car Salesman" (no offence, Mike) and make sure you understand what you're paying for.
good luck!
